The Mercury 4MH is a 4-horsepower single-cylinder FourStroke on a 123cc block, the same powerhead Mercury uses through its 5 and 6 horsepower motors, so it’s understressed at this rating. It’s carbureted with a rope start, a tiller with twist-grip throttle, a 15-inch short shaft, and a full forward-neutral-reverse gearshift instead of the spin-around reverse on the smaller portables. An internal fuel tank handles short runs, and it hooks to an external tank when you want range, all in a 57-lb package that’s saltwater rated with sacrificial anodes.

Real reverse and an external tank connection make it a working motor, not just a getting-there motor, for a skiff poking around the Casco Bay islands or a heavier tender that needs more push than a 2.5 gives it.
