The Mercury 2.5MH is a 2.5-horsepower single-cylinder FourStroke displacing 85cc, carbureted, with a rope start made easier by automatic decompression. It carries a tiller with 360-degree steering, a forward-neutral shift, a 15-inch short shaft, and an integral 0.3-gallon fuel tank, so there’s no external tank or wiring to deal with. At 41 lbs with a carry handle built in, it lifts onto a dinghy, inflatable, or small skiff by hand, and Mercury rates it for saltwater with sacrificial anodes and the same corrosion protection as its bigger outboards.

As a tender motor running out to a mooring in Casco Bay, or knock-around power on a small aluminum skiff along the Maine coast, it’s the kind of motor that spends the whole season in salt and off the stern of a bigger boat.
